I’m a professor in the Dept of Political Science and Diplomacy at Jeonbuk National University, South Korea. My research topic is ‘The Dynamics of a Taiwan Contingency, Northeast Asian International Order and the U.S.-South Korean Alliance’. This research has five main questions: ①How will a Taiwan contingency affect the Northeast Asian security?; ②How will the U.S.-South Korea alliance counter the contingency?; ③What will the alliance politics between the U.S. and South Korea be like in the event of a Taiwan contingency?; ④How should South Korea address the tensions between the U.S. and China?; ⑤What should Taiwan do to ease the tensions? Questions 1 ~ 3 deal with probable geopolitical turbulence by postulating various levels of China’s military action, large or small, in the event of a Taiwan contingency. Questions 4 ~ 5 cover reasonable diplomatic responses of relevant middle powers within the framework of international relations (IR) theory.
