    Visa

    Visa and ARC

    You may need to apply for a visa, so that your stay will be possible without having to leave and reenter Taiwan. Note that certain countries’ citizens (with passports valid for at least 6 months) may not need to apply for a visa if their stay doesn’t exceed 30 days.

    Staying for no more than 180 days

    If you plan to stay in Taiwan for less than 180 days, you should apply for a Visitor Visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. You can visit the website of the Taiwan embassy or mission in your country, to check how to apply and what application documents are needed.

    Staying for more than 180 days

    If you plan to stay in Taiwan for more than 180 days, you should apply for a Resident Visa. You will be permitted to enter Taiwan with your Resident Visa, but to remain in Taiwan you must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) within 15 days following your entry.

    With official visiting purpose for more than 180 days, you may apply ARC with National Immigration Agency. The form can be downloaded via  NIA ARC Application Form

    Epidemic Regulations

    Effective May 1, COVID-19 to be downgraded to Category 4 notifiable communicable disease and CECC to disband; Ministry of Health and Welfare to take charge of relevant preparation and response work

    On April 25, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported that the severity of COVID-19 decreased, the domestic coronavirus situation continued to be stable, and infections remained at a low point. Additionally, the international community has moved towards downgrading COVID-19 response to a lower emergency level. In consideration of these developments, the CECC announced that, effective May 1, COVID-19 would be reclassified as a Category 4 notifiable communicable disease. In addition to the reclassification of the disease, the Executive Yuan has approved the dissolution of the CECC on the same day, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare will organize regular cross-agency epidemic prevention liaison meetings to ensure the continued operation of COVID-19 preparation and response work.

Visiting Scholars Staying for More than One Month

There are several accommodation options for visiting scholars :

Your host department shall be responsible for applying the following accommodation options. However, NTU can not guarantee a space for your application.

NTU’s Visiting Scholars Dormitory 客座學人宿舍 (Wenzhou Street) is suitable for visiting scholars coming for a few months. The accommodation fee is charged per month.

Due to limited number of rooms of the visiting scholar dormitory, please ask your host department to apply it for you as early as possible if you prefer this option.

You have an ARC

The National Health Insurance (NHI) is Taiwan’s official medical insurance operated by the Bureau of National Health Insurance in the Executive Yuan’s Department of Health. Taiwan residents must register for the NHI. Scholars who hold an ARC must enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI).

You don’t have an ARC

You need an ARC to be eligible for the NHI. Without an ARC, you may want to enroll in other insurance programs. Your host department can assist you in enrolling in the program of your choice.

How to Apply for the NHI

  1. If you’re an NTU full-time faculty, please bring your application form and work contract to the NTU Personnel Department’s Section 4. They will assist in your application.
  2. If you’re a visiting scholar who stays over 180 days, please bring your application form and Resident/Entry and Exit Permit to the local administrative office where your household is registered to enroll in the program.

To receive your NHI Card, simply send your application form and legal ID to local NHI offices via mail or file your application at the nearest NHI office.

If your NHI Card is lost, bring your ARC to the nearest NHI office to apply for a replacement card. A processing fee may be charged.

Regulations

On the Implementation of Subsidy for EMI Courses at National Taiwan University

Types of Subsidized EMI Courses

1. Foundation and Liberal Education Courses

Foundation Courses: Service-oriented foundational courses (such as calculus, general biology, general physics, general pyschology, sociology, microeconomics, macroeconomics,etc.)

Liberal Education Courses: General liberal education courses approved by the Center for General Education.


2. Module Courses

To qualify as a module, integrate at least three graduate-level (or degree program) related courses, taught by two or more teachers, exploring a specific topic or field. The courses within the module then apply for the subsidy together.


3. Specialization Program Courses

Courses within a Specialization Program approved by Office of Academic Affairs.

Subsidy Amounts

1.New Courses (EMI courses applying for this subsidy for the first time)

Note: Starting in the 2022/2023 academic year, the maximum subsidy one faculty member can receive per semester is NTD 80,000 in total, including the course subsidy and teaching materials subsidy.

4.Starting in the 2023 Spring semester, successful applicants of the Subsidy will first receive one half of the monetary support. Upon participation in the CBE’s validated activities held from February to June 2023, the applicants will receive the remaining half of the monetary support.(Last update: 2022/12/30)


【Types of validated activities】

a. In-person activity: You may choose to participate in sharing sessions, workshops, etc., validated by the Faculty Division of CBE. When you attend in-person activities, you must sign-in and sign-out.

b. Online activity: You may also choose to watch a series of video-lectures regarding EMI on NTU COOL and complete the survey at the end. Only one online activity will count towards the requirement to complete two validated activities.

Additional Subsidy

Specialization Programs: An additional subsidy of 100,000NTD may be granted to the relevant department if all the courses with an approved Specialization Program convert to EMI. There is no time limit to receive this subsidy, and the department must fill out the relevant form and pass the review.

Principles of Review

If the course does not offer at least 2 credits, the subsidy amount will be 50% of the above amounts.


1.The actual student enrollment must meet the below criteria to qualify for the subsidy

(1)Undergraduate-level course: at least 20 enrolled students in principle.
(2)Upper Level Course (courses with a “U” in their course ID code): at least 15 enrolled students in principle.
(3)Master-level course: at least 10 enrolled students in principle.
(4)Doctorate-level course: at least 5 enrolled students in principle.


2.Except for new English taught courses, previous student enrollment, course evaluations from the previous three times course evaluations will be taken into consideration. Courses with well evaluation scores and an evaluation response rate greater than 25% will be given priority to receive the subsidy.


3.Starting from the 2022/23 Academic Year, departments/graduate institutes/degree Programs who have received other subsidies that promote EMI courses (such as the Master of Public Health Program, BA in Civil Engineering, International College programs, and the Graduate School of Advanced Technology)may not apply for the Subsidies, unless approved by the Office of International Affairs.

Application for English Medium Instruction Teaching Assistant (EMI TA) Subsidy

1.When applying for this subsidy for undergraduate and upper level courses, you can apply for the EMI TA Subsidy at the same time.
