My research explores the history and geography of early and medieval China, the history of Chinese geographical thought, the imperial integration of the South, and local history. Focusing on documents produced between the Han and Tang dynasties, I use official geographical treatises and monographs, fragments and manuscripts, ethnographical accounts, and excavated documents.
Specifically, I examine three interrelated historical phenomena: the early medieval origins of the “local turn” in the production of knowledge, ethnographical practices in bureaucratic contexts, and the medieval standardization of geographical knowledge.
