The sea has always been more than a physical expanse; it is a crucible of connections, shaping the trajectories of human history in profound and often unexpected ways. My research explores these maritime worlds, focusing on the intersections of power, trade, and culture across coastal China and beyond. While my primary interests lie in late imperial China, I am also intrigued by a wide range of topics, including the history of islands, the dynamics of port cities, as well as the circulation of commodities and ideas across oceans. As I see it, maritime history is not merely about ships and battles, or fisheries and pirates; it reveals the ties that bind our past and chart the course of our shared destinies.
