My research focuses on the contemporary images of East Asia (China and Taiwan in particular). I plan to collect material and do interviews related to my book project about the cultural history of contemporary Taiwan (after 1945). I aim to explore Taiwan’s cultural transformations, its rich linguistic and cultural diversity, and the emergence of a distinct Taiwanese identity. In Polish scholarship, comprehensive studies on Taiwan are scarce, with most focusing narrowly on politics and economics. I want to examine the broader consequences of these political and economic shifts while highlighting the paradoxes that define contemporary Taiwan—at least as I perceive them. A central theme of my research is the persistent tension between marginality and significance. Taiwan has often been overlooked by imperial powers, its inhabitants regarded as peripheral. Yet, at the same time, it remains a focal point in global geopolitical struggles, making it both seemingly unimportant and strategically crucial. During my stay, I hope to refine my ideas and finalize my manuscript. My goal is to provide Polish readers with a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s cultural landscape and identity formation.
