Information about legal document for travel
Invitation letter
Visiting scholars (i.e. with no contract) do not have a work permit. Nonetheless, they need an invitation letter from their NTU host. Using the invitation letter, they can apply for a visa.
In the invitation letter, some elements will be indicated to fulfill the visa type for academic exchange.
- There is no employment relationship between NTU and the scholar.
- The duration of the estimated stay in Taiwan
Visa and ARC
Once you have a valid visa, you won’t need to leave and reenter Taiwan during your stay.
Staying for no more than 180 days
If you plan to stay in Taiwan for less than 180 days, you should apply for a Visitor Visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. You can visit the website of the Taiwan embassy or mission in your country, to check how to apply and what application documents are needed.
Staying for more than 180 days
If you plan to stay in Taiwan for more than 180 days, you should apply for a Resident Visa. You will be permitted to enter Taiwan with your Resident Visa, but to remain in Taiwan you must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) within 30 days following your entry.
The Host department must apply to the Ministry of Education at least 2 months before your arrival. Once MOE approval document is obtained, you may go to the nearest TECO office to apply for an entry Visa.
** The approval letter should be sent to MOE by your host department and simultaneously notify NTU OIA. The letter should contain the following information:
- There is no employment relationship between NTU and the scholar.
- The estimated duration of stay in Taiwan
- The academic schedule or academic activities to be conducted in Taiwan (including the timeline).
After receiving approval from the MOE, visiting scholars may use the approval letter to apply for an entry visa at the nearest Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO).
